In about a month, the euro will turn eight years old. On January 1, 2002, the European Union pulled off a major feat – seamlessly switching from various, dissimilar currencies to one common euro. According to to author T.R. Reid, in his book ‘The United States of Europe,’ “That overnight switch to the euro was not merely an historic milestone in the emergence of the United States of Europe. It was also a formidable achievement. It was by far the largest currency conversion in world history, and it went off right on schedule, without a hitch.”
